  10.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To study on the HIV serotypes in Thailand during 1985-1994,
  11.        by using a high specific V3 peptide based enzyme immunoassay. METHODS:
  12.        From 1985-1994, a total of 307 anti HIV-1 positive sera collected from
  13.        30 homo/bisexual, 145 heterosexual and 132 intravenous drug users (IVDU)
  14.        were studied the serotypes based on the synthetic V3. The antigen,
  15.        derived from 15 amino acid of the V3 loop peptides from Thai genotype A
  16.        and Thai genotype B as previous described, were provided from CDC,
  17.        Atlanta, USA. RESULTS: The two serotypes of HIV-1 are circulating in
  18.        Thailand. The genotype Thai A or subtype E was introduced lately since
  19.        1988 and predominate in the sexual transmission group i.e. 85% while
  20.        genotype Thai B or subtype B was found in 1987 and predominate among
  21.        IVDU i.e. 73%. There were some sera which were not reacted with the two
  22.        peptides. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The epidemic of HIV-1 just started
  23.        in Thailand, during 1985-1986 only few cases of homosexual were found
  24.        positive. The outbreak in IVDU was notified in the early of 1988 and
  25.        spread to the heterosexual. The subtypes difference was found in the
  26.        sexual and injection transmission route. The subtype E which introduced
  27.        in 1988 showed the strong predominate now. This findings are important
  28.        for the effective vaccine design.
